Our Music

The Fellowship of St. Moses the Black is excited to launch this new music resource page. The scores here are all for Orthodox liturgical music inspired by African American Spirituals. Using the Spirituals for this kind of inspiration is an idea celebrated by leading Orthodox liturgical composers and choir conductors in America.

Cherubic Hymn

This Cherubic Hymn is inspired by “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” When we witness the Great Entrance of the Divine Liturgy we remember that we are not homeless orphans, but that Christ has adopted us and the Church has given us an eternal home.

Performed by the Illinois Orthodox Choir, Dr. Zhanna Lehmann, Director.

Anaphora

This Anaphora hymn is inspired by “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?” In using this melody for the high point of the Divine Liturgy, we are saying that yes, we are witnesses to our Lord’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Performed by the Illinois Orthodox Choir, Dr. Zhanna Lehmann, Director.

Our Father

This setting for the “Our Father” is inspired by “Balm in Gilead.” Christ the Word is the “balm in Gilead,” and the words of prayer that He taught us are an especial balm “to make the wounded whole.”

Performed by the Illinois Orthodox Choir, Dr. Zhanna Lehmann, Director.

Polyeleos

This Polyeleos is based on “I Couldn’t Hear Nobody Pray.” For all those past and present who have felt isolated in their love of God, we raise a joyous chorus of “Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Performed by the Illinois Orthodox Choir, Dr. Zhanna Lehmann, Director.

Beatitudes

A setting of the Beatitudes from the Divine Liturgy in the Slavic tradition, based on plantation songs of the 1800s.
